In the middle of getting ready for the 66th Grammy Awards, Kylie Minogue received word she had already won. “I was like, ‘Yes! Thankfully, I’m wearing ‘Padam’ red today!” she tells Bazaar, ahead of the red carpet at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 4. Although she has only just made it into hair and makeup, the perfectly “Padam Padam” red dress is waiting on the hanger for her.
This is the second Grammy win of Minogue’s career and the first to be awarded in the brand-new category Best Pop Dance Recording. The stacked group of nominees also included Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding; Troye Sivan; Bebe Rexha; and David Guetta, Anne-Marie, and Coi Leray.
“[Winning this new category] is just the cherry on top of the cake, because it’s what I’ve been doing for such a long time,” she says. “I think I inhabit this category, and to take the inaugural Grammy for Best Pop Dance Recording is poetic, in my opinion, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The Australian pop icon’s custom red satin corset gown features a dramatic chiffon cape from Dolce & Gabbana. Her red satin sandals, also Dolce & Gabbana, have traveled around the world in her luggage for a few months now, but she feels they’re the perfect pair for this dress. Minogue wears earrings and a statement ring from Vrai, saying she wanted to keep the jewels “somewhat subtle” to complement the gown. The overall look was styled by Frank Strachan. For glam, she opts for a fresh makeup look with a red lip—which, she says, “brought the look to life.”

In 2004, she won Best Pop Dance Recording for “Come Into My World,” from 2001 album Fever. “People have been posting my Grammy win from 20 years ago, and there’s a real synergy between that look and [this one], which I think I was only partially aware of,” she says. “I mean, obviously I didn’t know if I would win the Grammy when we were thinking about this! But there’s just a wonderful kind of bookend look and feel to the two Grammy moments.”

Although hardly a red carpet novice, Minogue admits it’s hard to make time for a regular preshow ritual amidst all the chaos. “I’d love to be able to say that I sit and have a moment, or have a glass of champagne, but it’s always a bit of a scramble,” she says. “But it does take a village for all of the elements to work in harmony with each other, so we do have a group acknowledgment that’s like, ‘Okay, here we go!’”
